Uber launches PIN code feature in SA aimed at making rides safer for all

In another step towards making ride-hailing technology safer, Uber has finally launched its PIN code feature in South Africa.

While it was already launched in the US and other territories last year, it has been activated on South Africa Uber users' apps this month.

This is how it works:

  • Once you request a ride you will receive a pin unique to the ride.
  • Once your driver arrives you tell the pin.
  • They enter the pin and that will activate the ride.

Other safety features on the phone include a button for emergencies, sharing your trip details with loved ones, 24/7 customer support, phone number anonymisation and RideCheck - by using sensors and GPS data the feature can detect if a trip has an unexpected long stop that will lead to a check-up from Uber support.
