Road tripping for the hops: Craft breweries of SA to add to your itinerary
When a Castle or a Windhoek isn't enough to satisfy your beer cravings, we are lucky enough to have access to a growing craft beer industry that will make you spoilt for choice - if you find yourself in a province with a healthy brewing scene that is.
Western Cape has long dominated the industry, especially in the urban landscape of Cape Town, with Gauteng hot on its heels and KwaZulu-Natal also representing its province.
The golden veins of the craft brew are slowly inching its way to other provinces from the meccas of Western Cape and Gauteng, with small microbreweries popping up in the local pub or a wine farm branching out to reel in the non-grape lovers. One day hopefully you'll be able to order a home-brew in every pub across the country.
Many travel to the Cape winelands specifically do taste their way through their vineyards, so why wouldn't you travel to hop your way through South Africa's independent brew scene.
Just don't try to order a Hansa at these craft breweries or you might make a master brewer cry.
The heart of South Africa's craft beer scene, you'll find new brews in the streets of Cape Town, along the Cape winelands routes, up the West Coast and down the Garden Route.
The smallest province packs a big punch when it comes to craft beers, and both Johannesburg and Pretoria has enough to keep you busy for a few days.
When you're feeling a bit too salty after a day at the beach and in the warm ocean, there are breweries up and down the coast to help quench that thirst.
The Sunshine and Wild Coast not only offers beautiful scenic walking routes, but also a brewery or two where weary travellers can kick up their sore feet with a cold one.
The Platinum Province is mining some hops and barley around Magaliesberg and Hartbeespoort Dam, so hop through their breweries before making your way to the City of Sun.
Mpumalanga and Limpopo
Our most northern provinces where wildlife rules in the Kruger that straddles both, Mpumalanga and Limpopo's scene is still busy growing but they can still compete with the rest of the country.
Free State and Northern Cape
Hot, arid climates may leave you sweating in these two dry provinces, but there's nothing dry about their craft beer. You may have to look a bit harder for them, but they are worth the journey.
