Condé Nast readers pit Joburg vs Cape Town

Cape Town – So, you think Cape Town is ‘cliquey’ and unfriendly, while Joburg is generally welcoming? Well, it seems like world travellers don’t necessarily agree.

According to Conde Nast Traveler’s annual survey, Johannesburg is the unfriendliest city in the world, while Cape Town found its way onto the friendliest list – the eighth position to be exact.

Now this may seem rather strange to most locals who generally believe the exact opposite about the two rival cities.

Conde Nast explained the results as follows:

“In our annual Readers' Choice Survey we ask readers to rate cities on a number of factors, including ‘friendliness,’ and the ones with the lowest scores, by default, end up with the title ‘unfriendliest.’ As you'll see from this list, that title can sometimes have nothing to do with people.”

Guess that explains it somewhat.

Feedback from readers revealed that safety was the biggest concern of travellers to the City of Gold and one even called it a city of ‘crime and contrast.’ More positive comments disclosed that despite the safety issues, the city is one of the most beautiful in the world with a stunning urban landscape, ‘excellent breweries’ and ‘great shopping.’

So, don’t feel too bad Jozi!

Also, the city finds itself in good company, with popular counterparts across the world, such as Paris, Beijing, Frankfurt and Milan.

Cape Town, on the other hand, was called ‘the most amazing place on earth’ by one reader and also lauded for its perfect mix of nature, coast, mountains, and beaches. The Mother City also seems to be considered mostly a safe space to navigate as a traveller.
