'We’re turning back, we can’t fly like this' - FlySafair pilot as technical issues cause turn-around delays

FlySafair flight FA 202 from Johannesburg to Cape Town had to return to Johannesburg shortly after takeoff due to an indication issue.

The crew were alerted to a potential issue shortly after take-off and "decided to return to OR Tambo International in the interest of safety. The aircraft arrived safely at OR Tambo International at 12:33," according to a statement issued by FlySafair.

A passenger on board Liam Del Carme tweeted about the incident saying, "When the captain says 'we’re turning back, we can’t fly like this' halfway into our climb, you get a tad unsettled. FA202 to Cape Town now back at OR Tambo. What now?"

"Our spare aircraft has been initiated to operate FA202. FA 203 will have a knock on effect. New times will be published shortly," says FlySafair Spokesperson Kirby Gordon.

"There was an indication issue. What it means is that one of the three sensors that measures air speed wasn't matching the other two, which means that it needed attention. Even though there are three sensors, air speed is important to measure correctly so we want them all lining up."

Passengers are being advised about the knock-on delays are as follows:

  • FA 202 will now depart at 15:00 from Joburg, and is estimated to arrive in Cape Town at 17:15
  • FA 203 will now depart at 17:40 from Cape Town, and is estimated to arrive in Joburg at 19:45.
