Eating Egypt: Authentic dishes to try in the land of pharaohs
The land of the pharaohs is magnificent for the grandeur with which Egyptians pays homage to both life and death.
Not without its conflict, Egypt's tourism levels took a considerable dip in the aftermath of the Arab Spring which started in 2011. However the destination remains relatively safe, with authorities aiming to ease security concerns.
From the home of the falafel, to spiced kushari, Egypt is more than a taste sensation for any foodie traveller looking for some authentic eats and treats.
What to eat:
Originally made in the 19th century, this Egyptian dish is a beautiful mix of macaroni, rice, lentils topped with a spiced tomato sauce and garlic vinegar that is garnished with fried onion and chickpeas.
Also known as just ful, this dish is comprised of cooked fava beans served with cumin, vegetable oil, garlic, lemon juice and optional extras such as assorted vegetables and spices.
Ta'amiyya or falafel
You may have heard of or even enjoyed falafel before but not the falafel the way they make it in its place of origin. These tasty balls are made from ground chickpeas or fava beans and are then deep-fried.
Stuffed pigeon. That's what this is but don't let the idea of eating something you see every day scare you off because in Egypt, they do things differently and the birds aren't just pulled off of a sidewalk or statue. The birds are kept and fed a special diet and six-week old squabs are selected before being stuffed with rice and freekeh (toasted, cracked, green wheat), giblets, cumin, pepper, nuts and onions before being spit-roasted or grilled whole.
