Easter break planning? Check out these Garden Route stays to suit all budgets
The Garden Route is awash with resorts, rest camps and five-star luxury stays - offering the perfect holiday experience to suit any budget.
I recently checked out three options - making either of them good options to consider for your next long-weekend or Easter holiday break, depending on your budget.
Easter and Freedom Day long-weekend 2020 dates to remember:
Good Friday will take place on 10 April, with Family Day or Easter Monday on 13 April. But the good news is that Freedom Day falls on Monday, 27 April - a bonus Long Weekend in the bag.
Otherwise, you can stretch it with three days leave to take Tuesday 28 to Thursday 30 April off, pull in Worker's Day on Friday, 1 May and you'll have a lavish 9 days off in a row, including the weekends.
The Garden Route gem of Wilderness Ebb and Flow is packed with day-trip activities offering natural highs, along with the comfiest rest camp to retreat to when you're needing to recharge. If you're planning to road-trip this part of the Garden Route - This rest camp accommodation is varied with budget stays in rondavels (some are equipped with their own shower and toilet, others have a communal ablution block).
They also have camping and caravan sites with power points for all your outdoor gadgets and gear. Glampers can opt for a stay in one of the forest cabins or the wheelchair friendly cottages. Click here for pricing.
The self-catering cabins and cottages are serviced daily. There are also coin-operated washing machines and tumble dryers are available at the Ebb & Flow Rest Camp.
FORMOSA BAY RESORT
From the annual school tours of Oudtshoorn, music fest busyness of Hartenbos and Plett Rage, through to the spectacular natural wonders of the Tsitsikamma forest - there are must-see attractions aplenty for both the local or international tourist to check out.

And since the area is expansive, finding the ideal base camp or two is the optimal way to make the most of a week-long escape, during off- or peak season. Overcast or not, it's almost always a good day in the Garden Route.
Located only 3km from the famous Plettenberg Bay Beach, Formosa Bay as a lifestyle resort with on-site attractions for kids of all ages is a great base for families with young children.
This place is such a treat, with everything you could possibly want to entertain your family - including two swimming pools, trampolines, a putt and play course to a spectacularly manicured garden, amok with rabbits.
Baby rabbits, fluffy rabbits, fat rabbits, fast rabbits.
Chasing after these little fluff balls will drain even the most rambunctious 8-year-old.
The facilities are regulated via an access pass - with the R100 all-access the best value option give the wearer unlimited use for the duration of their stay.
Over and above the facilities, the accommodation is spacious, modern and lifestyle orientated - They offer studios as well as one- or two-bedroom apartments. Family villas come complete with a fully-equipped kitchen and family-sized fridge. It's a comfortable and affordable home, away from home that is serviced daily - offering value way above its three-star rating. Click here for rates.
LIZ MCGRATH COLLECTION THE PLETTENBERG
Plettenberg Bay is a popular beach town along the Garden Route. And while the beauty of this special coastal stretch in South Africa is undeniable, retaining the charm of the area is a fine balancing act - especially as more people tap into a quaint, relaxed lifestyle pace.
Some ten years ago, Plett (as it has fondly become known) only had about 10k residents, now it's closer to 60k residents - and during the peak holiday season the local community explodes dramatically - as the area becomes all the rage for the festive season.
But you'd never really say so, heading down the bougainvillea-lined cul-de-sac where you'll find The Plettenberg, perched just above the golden beaches of the little town (and less than a five-minute walk down to the Indian Ocean from the main hotel). Coming face to face with the beachgoer bustle would be a choice you make as you venture out for the day into the centre of town, or for one of the many day-trip activities in and around the Garden Route.
