Outdoor CrossFit: The best way to spend your lunch hour in the heart of Cape Town
Battery Park is fast establishing itself as that cool teenager everyone wants to be friends with.
Situated next to the beautiful canals that lead to the V&A Waterfront, Battery Park has become a hub of outdoor activity: from skating, to watching movies at the Galileo open-air cinema, to stand-up paddling and riding waterbikes.
Now, say 'hello' to Battery Park CrossFit. The only CrossFit Box that offers you ways to do outdoor and indoor crosstraining in one session: from swimming the canal to working that core on a paddleboard, this CrossFit does more than just land-based exercises.
Dean Peters, the CrossFit trainer at this box took me through a 12:00-13:00 workout. I dash from inside the gym, where I swing 8-12kg kettle-bells along with squats, pull-ups and lunges to outside where I take on the rowing machine to finish the set. Sitting there (sweating and breathing heavily, nonetheless) with a view of the canal and some fresh air, is not a bad way to exercise.
The misunderstood thing about CrossFit is that you have to be a powerhouse athlete to take part. No. You go at your very own pace. You are your own competition, and the rest of the class and the coach are purely there to cheer you on along the way. And that they do almost religiously.
Though many choose to workout at 6:00 before heading to work or opt for that after work sweat session to miss traffic, I'd recommend going in your lunch hour for a workout. Pierre Venter of CrossFit also says that they want to encourage people working in the surrounding area of the V&A and Battery Park, to come try this as it's so close, and it's a beautiful place to train in.
The lunch classes are still relatively quiet, which means more personal attention - especially if you're a beginner. You will sweat, you will suffer (a bit), but just breathe and know that the results will come.
The gym has showers, so you're also covered there!
Go cross this box off your list! The first class is for free and you can choose your class and book beforehand. The options range from gymnastics, to weightlifting and endurance training.
