Cape Town's Mount Nelson hotel celebrates 100 years of pink - plus more cool spots painted pink

The meteoric rise of dusty pink came out of nowhere. And it has stuck ever since. Mostly to walls.

Restaurants, especially in Cape Town, have taken to this trend, painting their interior and often even their exteriors in this pastel hue.

But the Belmond Mount Nelson was there first. A hundred odd years ago to be exact.

The hotel is an institution, and going to "the Nellie" for high tea is always a treat. Even better, sit on the stoep at sunset and take in the serene surroundings, while you sip on a chilled glass of Chenin Blanc.

This past weekend the hotel celebrated 100 years of pink with a garden party, some local and international guests attended, and bottles of Veuve Clicquot bubbly were served, as they are also celebrating 200 years of of blended rosé sparkling wine.

A match made in candyfloss-hued heaven.

Vogue writes that the exterior was painted pink in 1918, shortly after the news that World War I ended reached the Cape.

Apparently, legend goes that the then-hotel manager wanted to paint the hotel in a colour that sparked joy, that was light and fresh and happy-making. This then set off a trend among some of the other fancy European hotels, and pastel exteriors soon became a thing.
