WATCH: This is the new Google Earth... a new 3D 360° view of the world
Cape Town - For the first time since 2012, Google Earth is getting its first major update with some state-of-the-art, uber-cool 3D maps, guided tours, and a whole lot more.
Built into the Google Chrome browser, the new Google Earth web interface gives a much more realistic look at things - in 3D 360° view.
Simply scrolling around to see what the world looks like from above is fascinating... but if that doesn't keep you busy for hours... Google Earth has also installed new gadgets, like information flashcards about iconic global destinations, an option to orbit the world in 3D and a chance to take the helm with Voyager - the travel companion taking viewers to secluded destinations and virtual experiences.
According to Extreme Tech, the Google Voyager experiences "aren’t just random algorithmic collections of locations or a mess of Street View photos either... Google actually worked with scientists and conservation experts to put together Voyager. There are 50 tours available at launch covering locales like the Galapagos Islands, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and “Hemingway’s Hangouts.”
There are also connections to the BBC’s Planet Earth, NASA, Sesame Street, and more for additional content when you zoom in on certain areas as well.
The 3D mode as renders the world so you can see things from any angle, based on data from satellites and Street View. The results are impressive and mesmerising!
