WATCH: I spent two nights in a cocoon in the Hemel-and-Aarde valley

Creation wine estate is situated at the foothills of the towering Babylonstoren Mountains in the Hemel-and-Aarde valley in Hermanus.

Like the name suggests, the farm embraced the new. And it has birthed something rather spectacular. In-line with its prestigious wines, it has erected a luxe self-catering ‘cocoon’ for two, known as Voormanshuis.

I call it a ‘cocoon’ because I felt protected and comforted within its walls. Over the course of a 2-night stay, it enveloped me. Physically, it kept me safe and sheltered from the howling wind and the scattered showers; but it also allowed me to breathe, to just be. No overthinking, no distractions, just views, wine and cosiness of a fireplace.

It almost has a semblance to a ‘last person on earth’ scenario, a bunker which shelters you from the outside – yet you still have a secret peephole from which you can observe the world going by. Only in this case, your peephole is a giant window that looks out onto the Creation estate.

Natural light fills the classically-decorated bathroom as grand windows offer you incredible views of the vineyards.

This new haven has been built from sustainably-sourced eucalyptus timber and is run entirely on solar. Complete with a light switch for the Pierneef artwork hanging on the wall, the other walls are also dressed beautifully in Marjorie Wallace, Jan Vermeiren and Christo Coetzee - with Strijdom van der Merwe providing the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ installation, outside the house.

Truly, this is a stay like no other. Unique in look, feel and experience.
