WATCH: Choose Paarl and Wellington next time you head to the Cape Winelands
Less crowded than other historic towns in the winelands, Paarl and Wellington are great destinations for a weekend away - even during season.
Great food, delicious wine, activities for the entire family and some magnificent stays await you in both these pretty towns - known for its hot summer temperatures.
In Paarl, the Green Gallery, situated at the Afrikaans Language Monument is a beautiful space dotted with spekboom, flowers and installations displaying Afrikaans poetry.
And strangely, Paarl has plenty of prisons to visit. Groot Drakenstein Prison was the last place in which Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. So go do the freedom stance in front of the prison here you'll find a statue of Madiba. And then treat yourself to a coffee and treat from Rose's, situated inside the old Paarl jail in the centre of town.
For lunch settle your bum on a seat at Back's Restaurant & Deli on the main road. Expect fresh, sizeable portions at reasonable prices. Afterwards, indulge the kid in you and pop into Eve Art Studio and draw a self-portrait or play around with ceramics.
Want luxe accommodation? Paarl's got it. Stay in the centre of Paarl at Laborie Estate, who just renovated its accommodation. It's so quiet and calm you'll feel like you are miles away from your real life.
Another excellent option is AfriCamps at Doolhof in Wellington that promises a glamping experience for those who like adventure, but prefer it while wrapped in an electric-blanket.
