Jaffles, pancake, biltong and cheese: How to eat yourself silly in the Karoo
Some call it an unforgiving landscape. Dusty roads and isolation, extreme temperatures of hot and cold and a lot of open space.
The Karoo is all of that, and so much more. It has hearty, countryside food close to all of our hearts.
Step out and go taste Karoo cuisine:
OPINION: The Karoo does biltong the best
The Karoo is boss when it comes to the best biltong and droëwors. And you can find it almost everywhere. Every, single small Karoo town has a church, a bar, and a butcher. That's just the way it is.
After a long drive on the N1, stop at Karoo Biltong butchery in Laingsburg to treat yourself.
De Wilge butchery in Cradock is another favourite, as well as Merino Butchery in both Graaff-Reinet and Beaufort West.
Have a drink at the Graaff-Reinet Club, Graaff-Reinet
The fourth-oldest settlement in South Africa, it is an iconic historic town worth a stop.
Erected on Church Square in 1880, the Graaff-Reinet Club was originally an exclusively male space. Today, the building has been split in two with one side being occupied by the Coldstream Restaurant and the other side still maintaining the club.
The club is a favoured hang out spots for locals looking to kick back with a craft brew or a harder drink.

Jaffles and cheese in Prince Albert
One of the foodiest towns of them all, Prince Albert.
The town is quiet and remote, and requires some activity. Eating could be that activity.
