Desperate to switch off your electric-blanket? These are the warmest places in SA right now
Love summer, hate everything else?
If it's sunshine you're chasing, Upington ranks 6th in the world as one of the sunniest cities in the world, racking up about 3 730 hours of sunshine a year.
However, sunshine doesn't necessarily translate to all-day warmth. Here's some of South Africa's warmest destinations to escape to in this bitter cold:
Unfortunately, you are a bit screwed. You might have to take a flight to Durban or Jo'burg to get closer to the warmth. The Northern Cape and the Karoo might be temporary havens for defrosting those toes during the day, but then come those icy nights defined by electric blankets, lots of wine or whiskey, three pairs of socks and warm water bottles.
Head to KZN for a faux summer weekend. Almost always a happy 20+ degrees, Umhlanga doesn't know winter chills. Only beach chills.
Ballito is another such example. Reaching high 20s and even thirties over June, July and August, it's the perfect place to head to for (warm) winter swims.
Letaba in Limpopo is the hottest place in SA with a mean annual temperature of 23.3ºC and an average annual maximum temperature of 35ºC. These average min and max temperatures combined makes it the warmest place in SA.
Stocked to the brim with game reserves and lodges due to its proximity to the Kruger National Park, you are spoiled for choice!
Or take a drive to Mpumalanga for a weekend, and go hiking in Sabie. Go chasing waterfalls like the Lone Creek Falls, explore the area's spectacular greenery and bask in the mild temps almost year round - it's a summer and nature-lovers' escape all at once.
