24-hour getaways: Get that holiday feeling on a tight schedule
The saying, "Change is as good a as a holiday", is one I've always lived by. The same goes for a change of scenery, even if it's just for a day.
A long, relaxing holiday filled with treats like afternoon naps, delicious food experiences and getting lost in the beauty and splendour of nature, is always preferred. However, short breaks can lift your spirits any time of year.
Saturday early morning drives equating 24-hour escapes should be top-of-mind in 2019, especially as schedules start to fill up and we see belts tighten with increasing petrol, and subsequently, food prices.
The West Coast for Cape Town
I recently went on a 24-hour getaway to Paternoster on the West Coast. Sitting less than an hour and a half from Cape Town, this is a short journey to undertake for a big reward. We made a day of it, stopping along the way at padstalle, spoiling ourselves with fresh homemade chicken pies and coffee as we headed up the coast.
Lunching close to the beach, we sipped on crisp Swartland Chenin with ice as the salty sea air added some crunch to our hair.
TIP: Destinations like Grotto Bay, Yzerfontein and Velddrif also make great one-day breakaway spots.
Magaliesberg for Johannesburg
Just a bit more than an hour from Jozi lies a dreamy outdoor bushveld breakaway from city life. Next to the Magaliesberg Mountains sits B'sorah, a luxe camping spot situated near the Hartbeespoort Dam.
Sit on the deck, light a fire, and watch the world stand still as your thoughts calm, as you are removed from the busy everyday work and home life filled with people, chores and distractions.
Howick for Durban
Instead of staring at the TV screen, go chasing waterfalls. Just an hour and 15 minutes from Durban you'll find the Howick Falls. Watch cascading waters tumble down from over 95m high into the uMngeni River. The view is worth the drive alone.
Rosendal for Bloemfontein
A bit more than 2 hours outside of Bloem you'll find this quaint little country town. On the edge of the Witteberge, this farming town offers incredible 360 views and promises absolute peace and quiet. Go hike, horse-riding or just relax in the stunning surroundings.
