WATCH: Gutsy hyena steals lion's kill at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park

Cape Town - A brave and opportunistic hyena at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park in KwaZulu-Natal swooped in on a lion’s kill when the big cat turned its back.

Hyenas usually roam in packs – which certainly makes it easier for them to fight off larger predators when they attempt to steal their meals. But even so, as a clan, they can still be chased off by the power of a single lion.

Shared by Heritage Tours Safaris on YouTube, this video shows just how persistent the wild dog can be, waiting for the right moment to make the steal.

“The hyena had already been chased away a few times by the lion, however being a hyena he waited for his opportunity to grab a piece of kill,” says Heritage Tours Safari about the “insistent hyena”.

As for the lion, apart from being satisfied by what looks like a hearty meal, it appears quite perplexed by the hyena’s audacity and realises it’s not worth the chase.
